Sleep Loss, Insomnia, & Emotion Regulation

The Center for Sleep and Cognition (CfSC) at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is seeking both good and poor sleepers (e.g., patients with Insomnia Disorder) for a study exploring the impact of sleep and sleep loss on emotional processing and regulation. The study will take place at the BIDMC campus.

Participants will be asked to track their sleep for 1 week prior to participating in the study using an electronic sleep log and/or wrist-worn activity monitor. They will then participate in a sleep or sleep restriction study at in the CfSC (part of the Clinical Research Center) at BIDMC. This study could involve being admitted to the Clinical Research Center for up to 4 consecutive days/nights. Participants will complete measures of emotional processing throughout this study time. Additionally, participants will be required to participate in an fMRI scan in the BIDMC Radiology Department.

To be eligible, subjects must be between the ages of 18 to 40 and must complete a screening session to determine eligibility. Again, we are seeking both good and poor sleepers. Individuals taking medications for cognitive impairment are not eligible. Individuals taking medications for sleep issues must refrain from medications for a two week period prior to the start of the study.
